Pakistan Urges Diplomatic Progress as Iran Tensions Continue
His remarks came during a meeting in Islamabad with US Charge d’Affaires Natalie Baker, where both sides discussed the broader regional situation and ongoing diplomatic efforts linked to planned talks in the Pakistani capital, as shared by the Interior Ministry on social media.
Naqvi described the extension of the ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump as a “welcome development” that could help reduce tensions. He also expressed hope that Iran would take steps toward de-escalation.
“We also hope for progress from Iran’s side,” he said, adding that Pakistan’s leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, are working toward a lasting resolution.
He further emphasized the importance of continued diplomatic engagement, stating that all parties should give negotiations and peaceful solutions a fair chance.
The comments come against the backdrop of ongoing tensions following the US-Israeli strikes on Iran earlier in the year and Iran’s subsequent response involving missile and drone attacks, as well as disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Pakistan has played a mediating role, helping facilitate a ceasefire agreement earlier in April and hosting initial rounds of talks in Islamabad. However, no final agreement has yet been reached, and further negotiations are expected to take place in the coming days.
The US administration recently extended the ceasefire period, reportedly following requests involving Pakistani diplomatic channels, to allow additional time for Tehran to present a consolidated proposal.
