Pakistan Urges Restraint Amid Iran, Gulf Escalation
“We call for the utmost restraint and hope both sides will adhere to the ceasefire,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Tahir Andrabi told reporters in Islamabad, according to a broadcaster.
He cautioned that renewed military escalation represents the “major obstacle” to progress in negotiations between the US and Iran. Andrabi added that Pakistan is prepared to host new dialogue between the two parties, recalling that Islamabad facilitated high-level Iran-US talks in April after a ceasefire.
Tensions flared earlier this week when the US military launched strikes near the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran responded with missile attacks on Wednesday, while drones struck Kuwait International Airport, killing one person.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps denied responsibility for the airport incident, claiming that damage to a passenger terminal was caused by a malfunctioning US-made Patriot missile system. However, US Central Command (CENTCOM) rejected this assertion, stating that Iranian drones were responsible.
Iran also claimed responsibility for attacks on US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, describing them as retaliation for alleged US strikes on Qeshm Island in the volatile strait.
