Pakistan's Sharif Confirms US-Iran Deal Text Finalized

(MENAFN) Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced Friday that the United States and Iran have reached agreement on the "final text" of a pact to end their war — and that Islamabad is now working to lock in the closing steps toward a formal signing, potentially in Geneva within days.

In a post on X, Sharif said Pakistan was "working closely" with Washington and Tehran to "finalize the next steps," adding that peace between the two nations "has never been this close as it is now" — a striking declaration from the leader who has served as the primary architect of the mediation effort.

Pakistan has played the role of intermediary between the two warring nations since brokering a ceasefire on April 8 that halted a conflict which erupted on February 28. Sharif himself hosted the highest-level direct talks between Washington and Tehran since the two countries severed diplomatic relations in 1979.

Sharif May Travel to Geneva
Pakistani government sources told media that Sharif is likely to travel to Geneva personally to witness the signing of a possible peace agreement between the US and Iran — a move that would underscore Islamabad's central role in one of the most consequential diplomatic breakthroughs in decades.

The potential Geneva signing received further international validation Friday when Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis praised Pakistan's mediation role during a phone call with his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar. Cassis hailed Islamabad's efforts amid mounting reports of an imminent ceremony.

Sharif Warns of Sabotage Campaign
Despite the breakthrough, Sharif sounded a cautionary note, warning that spoilers were actively working to derail the peace process. He cautioned against what he described as "an incessant misinformation campaign being waged by those who want to sabotage the peace deal" amid Pakistan's ongoing "intense mediation efforts."

The warning came as the diplomatic push entered its most delicate phase. On Thursday, US President Donald Trump revealed that he had called off imminent airstrikes against Iran and claimed that a deal was nearly complete. Reports subsequently emerged that US Vice President JD Vance may travel to Europe to formally sign the prospective agreement on Washington's behalf.

With the "final text" now confirmed and a signing venue being finalized, the coming hours are expected to be decisive for a peace process that — if successful — would reshape the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East.
