Mediators Race to Revive US-Iran Talks as Strike Threat Looms
The mediators are pressing Iran to let UN inspectors into its bombed nuclear sites, offering partial relief from US sanctions in exchange, the outlet said, citing US, Israeli and regional sources. Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Türkiye are backing the push.
US President Donald Trump confirmed to the outlet that contacts with Iran are under way through intermediaries, but said he cannot predict whether they will succeed. “We need to finish the job — either through a deal or another way — we will find out if negotiations can succeed,” he said.
The diplomatic push comes after weeks of threats from Trump to launch large-scale strikes on Iran.
In a separate report Wednesday, a major US financial daily said Vice President JD Vance has sent a letter to Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei in an attempt to revive peace talks. US officials and people familiar with the matter told the paper the letter went out at Trump’s direction, as Washington tests whether a diplomatic framework could forestall fresh US strikes on Iran in the coming weeks.
Asked whether he had directed Vance to contact Iran, Trump said: “No, what it is is that they need help with medical supplies and various things.”
“He asked me what I thought. I said, if you want to do that, that’s okay. Basically, it’s getting supplies in to help people that are not well,” he added.
